I spent a morning staring in amazement at Boston.com’s gallery of National Geographic’s International Photography Contest submissions. From crashing waves to fighting hippopotamuses to a simple portrait of a child, the gallery reminded me that travel photos can tell stories in any number of ways.

A pair of restless legs in San Diego: World Hum contributor David Farley read from his book An Irreverent Curiosity last night at a bookstore in La Jolla. His recounting of his search for the Holy Foreskin—including how he infiltrated the Vatican—had the crowd laughing and riveted.

The Icefields Parkway, a highway that runs from Jasper to Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. It runs less than 150 miles, but I spent most of a day driving it because I was pulling over so often for photos. Here’s a shot of Peyto Lake, near the south end of the parkway.

The cell phone waiting area at Dulles International Airport. Okay, I didn’t really love my time there, but I loved watching my 18-month-old son, who, while waiting to head to the terminal and greet his grandma and grandpa, found great entertainment in the FedEx trucks near the waiting area.

Hey thanks so much Mike for linking to National Geographic photos on The Big Picture.
Eva, love your photo but you’ll never get to the Yukon at this rate! By the way, here’s a cool Yukon shipwreck story for you:

Very cool shipwreck shot, Marilyn - thanks. And yeah, it’s been a long haul - just 3 days of driving left now, though!

Eva: after all that driving you’ll be ready for Takhini Hot Springs in Whitehorse. Go at night and watch Northern Lights as you unwind: http://www.takhinihotsprings.yk.ca/
Maybe check out this place too: http://www.greatriverjourney.com/

I love the photo! The lake is so nice and so blue and the snow made the view a perfect one!

Stunning photograph. I think an image can literally tell a thousand words, you literally can’t sum some experiences up.

That is a mesmerizing photo. Would love to see the same shot at different times of the year.

Awesome picture. I am a photography enthusiast too. And I always use Sardinia’s scenic spot as my subject. Dude, you got to go there. For photographer like us, Sardinia is like a paradise awaiting to be revealed.

“pulling over so often for photos ” Sounds so attractive of the scenes along the way.
