Apparently, he must burn again. At the annual Burning Man arts festival in the Nevada desert, the 40-foot-tall wooden Burning Man effigy went up in flames early Tuesday morning, four days before the traditional bonfire was scheduled to occur. A San Francisco man is facing felony arson charges in connection with the fire.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that some of the 15,000 attendees were on the dry lakebed watching the lunar eclipse when the fire broke out. More than 30,000 people are expected to attend the festival this weekend.
“People have been saying for years that it would be funny to sneak up and burn the Man early in the week,” one festival veteran told the paper. “But it was always just one of those things that you hear people say.”
Organizers have vowed to rebuild the Burning Man statue so he can burn again Saturday.
