I’m a community college librarian and this article reminds me of how little we promote student travel, studies abroad, or anything that distracts from the career path. I agree whole-heartedly with everything Miss Joshi says in this article. Every student I’ve known, who traveled while in college, says it was a wonderful life-changing experience, but so few get any real academic benefit from it. Our system doesn’t reward it like we should.

I agree with both of these statements though, as life generally teaches, nothing holds true under all circumstances. I studied for 9 months in England through my university and although it set me behind I also received a minor in foreign studies just for being there! Many students from this program are still graduating on time but my experience gave me a change of heart and direction with my life. I have changed my major to English and hope to obtain a career with a company such as World Hum in the future (wink wink).
