Hi Worldhum:

This scifiey survey computer apparatus that keeps tracks of how many hits a piece gets are quite useful for separating out the most popular must-read travel whimsies from the offal and dross.

The best of the bunch this week is obviously Rolf Potts’s way experimental “The Art of Writing a Story About Walking Across Andorra,” which is also the conclusional endpiece for his new book Marco Polo Didn’t Go There! Rolf rises again!

Mr. Potts makes the art of writing travel essays look easy. I’m afraid, though, that his confident breezy style is much imitated, yet his elegant prose is difficult to pull off. I’m pretty sure I met him once at a beach resort in Bali, where he was trying to impress a topless German sunbather. Or, nah, maybe that wasn’t him. . . .
