Writer’s Digest on the Business of Travel Writing

imageWriter’s Digest offers tips for aspiring travel writers in its August issue. There’s an interview with editors at four travel magazines—Islands, Travel + Leisure, Town & Country Travel and Condé Nast Traveler. (Said one editor: “For me, it’s important that we have a great mix of places that are wonderful.”) And there’s a piece about the old debate over ethics and freebies, featuring the sorry tale of a freelance writer who was dumped by The New York Times after he confessed to having once accepted a comped trip (though not for the story he was writing for the Times). The Writer’s Digest stories are not available online. While we’re on the subject, on Sunday, the Miami Herald also published a story on travel writing and freebies.
