Answering the Call of the Mall

Spending an entire day at the mall: Hell. Reading about Joe Queenan’s day-trip to the Palisades Center mall in West Nyack, New York: Hilarious.

Ha! I grew up about ten minutes from this massive retail kingdom. Queenan’s take surely puts a different (and funny) spin on it.

But there was tons of controversy when it went up ten years ago, since it’s a huge ugly eyesore built on some sort of swampy mess. My family takes care to avoid it as much as possible (holidays and weekends especially)—but it’s (unfortunately) an unavoidable epi-center of commerce in the region.
Just last week I was there with my mom, for an early movie and some Pan Asian food. But as a kid I would go to the movies at one of the two theaters that used to line the main street of my own tiny “picayune hamlet” of Pearl River. I’m suddenly nostalgic for a time when I could walk to the movies! Now I am left hardly any other option in Rockland County than to drive over to the mega-mall and stay for awhile. Or longer…

Queenan’s article makes me think they might as well put a hotel or hostel in there too, so folks can make a weekend trip of it. I’m out of the loop on this, but surely some “Destination Mall” has already done this?

I’m sure many malls cater to overnight shoppers/travelers. For sure, the Mall of America in Minneapolis encourages it. I don’t see any hotels in the mall floorplan, but there’s a link for hotel reservations on the home page of the mall’s Web site, mallofamerica.com
