The Book Standard reports (via the New York Post) that Billy Crudup will star as Dean Moriarty in the upcoming adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road.” Francis Ford Coppola has owned the film rights to Kerouac’s classic autobiographical road novel since 1979, and he announced last month that he finally found the right director and writer to guide the picture. His picks—The Motorcycle Diaries director and writer, Walter Salles and Jose Rivera—look great on paper. Crudup does, too.
He plays a lot of on-the-edge characters, and given his roles in Almost Famous and World Traveler, he seems to have a thing for the road. The Book Standard also reports that Scarlett Johannson and Chloë Sevigny are being considered for the female lead. Colin Farrell is also rumored to be part of the cast, possibly as Kerouac’s alter-ego, Sal Paradise. Filming is scheduled to begin sometime in 2006.
A good overview of Kerouac and the “On the Road” phenomenon can be found at NPR. It includes pictures of the scroll and the author’s sweet and perhaps drunken version of My Funny Valentine.
