Chuck Klosterman: ‘What is a Road Movie, Really?’

imageMore specifically, he asks, as the subhead of his rambling story in The Believer says, “What’s the difference between a road movie and a movie that just happens to have roads in it?” Klosterman’s attempt to get to the bottom of the question involves references to “non-dead author John Leland,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.” It also includes equations, such as this:

(MAN + MACHINE) - (GOD < SOCIETY) + NATURE/HIMSELF
If you’re a fan of Chuck Klosterman’s rambles, you’ll probably like this piece. If you’re not, you might say to yourself, “Huh?” And if you’re reading foremost as a fan of road movies, as I did, I’m not sure what you’ll think of the story. I’m still trying to make sense of it. Rambling? Yes. But I give Chuck props for analyzing Smokey and The Bandit, Duel and Vanishing Point. Nice.

And for the record, the Jerry Reed tune is “Eastbound and Down”—not westbound.
