imageStories by Peter Hessler and Amy Tan anchor what looks to be a terrific May issue of National Geographic. Hessler has the cover story, and Tan writes about the Dong people, who have no written language. Also of note: a reprint of a 1955 story by Heinrich Harrer, My Life in Forbidden Lhasa.

I lived in Shanghai and traveled through Asia and China as an expatriate for a USA based multi-national. I read NG’s May issue, cover to cover.  It is accurate, it reminds me of how much I love the cutlure and the unassuming, wonderful people, so much so I think about returning, permenantly.  I was in Costa Rica last week sipping a cold one in the pool swim-up bar when I overheard a conversation with racists overtones regarding the Chinese people.  It makes me sad about how introverted and small some people are. They miss so much! The Chinese people accept everyone, face value. The Dong people are an example for the world. The USA has so much and knows so little. Great issue, Thanks!
