Hurricane-force winds battered the Lufthansa flight as it attempted to land during in Hamburg, Germany this weekend, causing one wing of the Airbus A320 to scrape the runway. The pilot pulled up and eventually landed on his second effort, providing relief to the 137 people on board and an amazing and scary piece of video:

Yikes. That reminded me of a RyanAir landing I endured in gale force conditions in Biarritz last year.

Once I got over the fear of the seemingly near death experience, I couldn’t help but reflect on how different nationalities expressed their anxieties in what seemed like our final moments:

Kudos to the pilot, co-pilot, and navigator on this flight!!  Although my first instinct is to say, WHY NOT TRY FOR ANOTHER LANDING SITE that did not have such fierce winds??!!, I guess the storm was so huge that another landing site was not any better.  If I had been a passenger on this flight that little bag would have been used by me for the first time on any flight I have ever taken.  I flew from Washington,DC to an airport in the mountains of Virginia.  It was a very “up and down” flight.  After I got to my destination I learned from my father that they posted tornado watches and 1 warning in the area we had just flown through.  All of this makes one wonder just what guidelines, if any, are used by flight controllers when allowing planes to take off or land?  Well, I was safe then and these people are safe now.  “All’s well that ends well”.
