Win a Trip With Nicholas Kristof, Take Two

New York Times columnist and emancipation tourist Nicholas Kristof has announced another contest to find travel companions for a reporting trip to Africa. Last year, Missouri grad student Casey Parks joined Kristof, and she blogged, vlogged and spoke eloquently about her experiences. This year, Kristof writes, he’ll take along a student and a teacher, and they’ll report on their experiences at NYTimes.com and on MySpace. The “Win a Trip” contest is part of Kristof’s effort to expose more people to the ongoing horrors in Africa and to promote travel in the developing world as a tool for enlightenment. He writes: “Let’s face it: We’re provincial.”

That’s one reason that I always exhort college students to take a “gap year” and roam the world, or at least to take a summer or semester abroad—and spend it not in Paris or London, but traveling through Chinese or African villages. Universities should give course credit for such experiences—and offer extra credit for students who catch intestinal worms.

Applications for the contest will be available Tuesday at the New York Times and at Kristof’s MySpace page.

I can only imagin what Africa looks like. I usually stay glue to the TV trying to catch a glimse of what the country looks like. Winning this trip would be the most exciting thing that ever happen to me, with the only exception of my two beautiful children. This would be a an experience of a life time.
