That astronomical figure comes from a titillating look at Las Vegas’s adult entertainment offerings in USA Today. It’s an estimate from Sin City’s chamber of commerce, and, if accurate, it’s more than the gambling haul on the Las Vegas Strip in 2006. Analysts put that at an estimated $6.5 billion. I was surprised by the staggering figure, but perhaps I shouldn’t be considering the ubiquity and success of the “What happens here, stays here” ad campaign. “Our vice squad is busy,” officer Martin Wright, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, tells USA Today’s Kitty Bean Yancey.
Las Vegas (Who Else?) Leads in U.S. Tourism Ad Spending

Sin City spent $52,158,800 in advertising in 2006 to lure travelers to the desert, almost tripling the outlay for the runner-up on the list, Puerto Rico. Texas, Florida and Arkansas round out the top five. Brandweek has a list of the top 25. (Via Jaunted)

We said our in-person goodbyes to the Stardust last year, and now the iconic Las Vegas hotel and casino is officially no more. The Stardust was imploded early this morning—the AP has the video—to make room for Echelon, a $4.4 billion resort. The Stardust will live on in Vegas history as the city’s first low-cost, mass-market property.

You don’t have to be an academic to appreciate the work of Las Vegas scholar and writer Hal Rothman, who died Sunday at the age of 48. In books like Neon Metropolis: How Las Vegas Started the Twenty-First Century and Devil’s Bargains: Tourism in the Twentieth Century American West, he explored tourism’s powerful impact on Las Vegas and the Western U.S. “He didn’t dismiss it (Las Vegas),” said one UNLV professor in an obituary in today’s Los Angeles Times. “He understood that some people loved it, others hated it, and you had to take Las Vegas seriously as a subject for study.”

The numbers are staggering: Macau’s gambling revenue rose from $2 billion in 2001 to $6.95 billion in 2006, and this year analysts predict a take of $8 billion. Las Vegas took in $6.5 billion in 2006. Why is Macau booming? According to a New York Times story, liberalized Chinese travel policies have helped spur growth.

I spotted the guy in the ghoulish grim reaper costume, gripping his faux scythe, at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas Saturday night. He fit right in among the other Halloween revelers—the scantily clad nurses, the Top Gun pilots in their flight suits and reflective sunglasses, Richard Nixon and his entourage of Secret Service agents. But the grim reaper really should have been skulking several blocks up the strip at the Stardust, where death loomed like a hazy cloud of casino cigarette smoke. On Wednesday, the half-century-old hotel with the strip’s most iconic neon sign will close for good. The usual implosion will follow in several months, paving the way, as the Vegas hotel life cycle dictates, for a new megaresort.
