Editors’ Note: Creating this map involved a slightly muddy process, since, after all, travel books tend to be about motion. How do you pin a journey down to a single spot on the map? Some books, covering a clearly laid-out journey (“Dark Star Safari,” for instance), are mapped at their starting points, while others are pegged to the city or region where the bulk of the narrative is set. The rest, the ones that cover an array of places without a definite route or start and end points, are mapped according to the locations being described in the quotations we selected for each book.
