The New York Times has just launched Jet Lagged: Navigating the Unfriendly Skies, a group-written blog boasting some contributors familiar to World Hum readers. Among them: Wayne Curtis, Elliot Hester, Patrick Smith and Pico Iyer. Iyer kicked off the proceedings yesterday with a contrarian idea: “Air travel is in fact as comfortable and reasonable today as it’s ever been.”

Everything is NOT the cost of oil. Poor customer service is just poor customer service. I am grateful for “Unfriendly Skies” revealing situations similar to what my family experienced a year ago. United Air Lines accused my son of being “too late” to board his plane. He was not only EARLY to board, he and about a dozen others were forced to be driven to a neighboring city after the original aircraft United sent was TOO SMALL for the amount of booked passengers. When I attempted to find a manager to complain (my son is a US Marine and could not be late returning), I was met by a sarcastic and smug representative who informed my family that she “had better things to do than to baby-sit passengers”. After writing the President of United Air Lines, I received months later a lame response letter with NO apology asking ME to supply them with my son’s flight information, which THEY already had access to. Clearly, this is only MORE “pass the buck” accountability. I have shared this story with MANY people, and I would rather WALK than “fly the friendly skies”. I am hoping for a class-action suit to finally come out against these greed-driven airlines that treat customers like absolute DIRT!
