True or false: Dressing well and asking politely can get you a first-class upgrade, street food isn’t safe, and jeans are a no-no in Europe. World Hum contributor Eric Lucas tackles these and nine other oldie-but-goodie travel myths for MSNBC.

Hey Eva,
Followed the link, read the article, and had to debunk one of the debunked myth. Specifically, the one about the cell-phone. Before leaving for London about two-years ago I was told by T-Mobile that my “free” nokia would not work. So, I ran and bought a brand new phone for about $50. Tried using this phone in the U.S. for two weeks before leaving. By the end of the week I called T-Mobile’s customer service: after having the call dropped 3 times and not being able to answer the phone when it rang the customer service agent actually agreed with me and told me I had to return the phone. Apparently, I was sold a refurbished phone! Got to the store, returned the phone, tried to buy a new one, but T-Mobile would not honor the “free upgrade.”
So, I ended up going to London with my old dinosaur. Surprise, suprise ~ worked perfectly all over England, Ireland, Paris and Madrid. In conclusion, a U.S. phone will probably work. We are told to buy another phone b/c it just means more money for that company!
