How We Travel: 25 Pivotal Changes in the Last 25 Years

As part of the lead up to its 25th anniversary next month, USA Today has put together a list of 25 changes that have had an impact on the way we travel. The No. 1 change: online booking. “This year,” according to USA Today, “Internet sales will represent more than half of all travel bookings.” Other changes that made the list: TSA airport security (No. 2), seat-back entertainment systems (No. 13), TripAdvisor (No. 17) and the ascent of low-cost airlines (No. 20).
It’s a solid list, though the rise of cheap flights could be higher, and the inclusion of high-tech roller coasters (No. 22) is a misfire.

Hmm… How about the rise of gas prices? When I got my license (a short nine years ago…) gas was $0.45/litre, and I wouldn’t hesitate to just drive out of the city with friends on a weekend. Now it hovers around $1.15 and I plan my roadtrips a lot more carefully.
Would have been interesting to see something about the impact of environmental concerns on people’s travel habits too. (Or have many people actually started to change yet?)
Interesting list though - I had forgotten all about smoking on planes. I think my first flight was probably also my last with smoking allowed…
