Joining the Cult of Rick Steves

San Francisco Chronicle columnist John Flinn knows the prevailing opinion of travel guide author and TV host Rick Steves.

“Mention Steves around serious travelers and they’ll regard you with a mixture of condescension and pity, as if you’d just asked where in the Louvre you’d find the Thomas Kinkades,” he writes. “He comes off as a little geeky on TV. And his books are filled with corny jokes and the sort of beginner tips—like how to pronounce cafe au lait—that the Lonely Planet crowd doesn’t need or want.” To formulate his own opinion, serious-traveler Flinn used one of Steves’ books during a trip to Paris. The verdict: “I’m thankful I joined, at least temporarily, the cult of Rick Steves.”
