Almost 16,000 “book-loving NPR Types” have finished voting on the best beach books of all time. The top 5:

1) The Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling
2) To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
3) The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini
4) Bridget Jones’s Diary, by Helen Fielding
5) Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen

My suggestion from last week finished at No. 99.

The Kite Runner? I guess this is why “NPR types” need their own list. If that’s light beach reading, I’d love to see their list of heavy stuff.

Looking through the entire NPR list, it covers everything from modern vampire (Twilight and Interview with the Vampire), through to classics and sci fi. My beach selection would tend toward escapism rather than reality. After all, being at the beach is an escapist activity, so reading about some faraway place or distant time adds to the romance of a seaside holiday.
