Popular Mechanics picked Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport as one of the 10 pieces of infrastructure in the United States that needs to be fixed now, citing near misses on runways, an ineffective new radar system and the country’s worst record of on-time departures in the first half of 2007.

Less than 65 percent of flights at the airport left on time, a number that just might drop further this year given the cancellation of more than 1,000 American Airlines flights in the past few days—O’Hare is, of course, an American hub.

Personally, I’d be happy if 65 percent of my flights out of O’Hare departed as scheduled. I can’t remember the last time one of my flights there left on time.

I’m doing some travel right now for business and am glad its not with American. That is such a mess and put that on top of losing three airlines last week.

O’Hare is huge, I’m not surprised it needs fixing.

What is it going to take for the City of Chicago to fix the problems at O’Hare?!  Maybe Mayor Daley will choose to spend the necessary dollars if Chicago is chosen as the Olympic city for the 2016 games.  Until then, let’s hope they’re able to reduce the numbers of near misses so that they don’t turn into serious accidents.—Family Travel Girl http://www.familytravelgirl.com
