Queen Mary 2 Mutiny Update: “They Say There Is Anarchy!”
Travel Blog • Michael Yessis • 01.24.06 | 5:34 AM ET
They’re still restless aboard the Queen Mary 2. BBC News has solicited feedback (scroll to bottom) from cruisers aboard the ship and others affected by the QM2’s problems, and at least one respondent has quite the inflated sense of the enormity of their plight.
Julian Abbiati, who was supposed to meet his friends from the ship during the scheduled stop in St. Kitts, writes, “The people on the vessel including my good friends should look to history and the likes of the late Rosa Parks and stand their ground for a full refund and nothing less!” Ah, yes. Demanding a full refund on a luxury cruise is just like sparking the civil rights movement.
Rob Lightbody 01.24.06 | 5:45 PM ET
From reading the BBC’s biased coverage, anyone would think QM2 was sinking! Someone even compares this trivial incident with the Titanic disaster with 1500 people killed (slightly more of an inconvenience).
QM2 is apparently still making nearly 26 knots - faster than just about every other liner in the world.
John Bradford 01.24.06 | 7:43 PM ET
Whiney little turdbrain clowns who expect a perfect world and
“big companies” to provide endless funding just because they are big. These people make me puke. If I were on this ship, I would have tossed these little
bastards over the side.
Alexander J Groppe 01.24.06 | 11:18 PM ET
Having travelled on the Queen three times now - I must tell you that she is HERSELF a destination! Cunard has been more than generous in offering those affected by the accident in Ft. Lauderdale a 50% refund. Quite honestly, the little islands they missed are Caribbean ‘turd’ plops! I’d much rather say on board and enjoy the amenities of the QM2!
And, of course, there is always the Canyon Ranch Spa to enjoy - sounds like many of the disgruntled passengers could use a little Prune juice and a massage! Yet, I have a feeling they’d rather complain than spend the $200 a pop on a quality massage.
Accidents happen - which is why we call them ‘accidents.’ I hardly think the Commodore intentionally sailed his Billion dollar vessel into a channel wall - which is the root of the delay that created the need to shave three ports of calls from her South American itinerary.
It is further ridiculous that folks are complaining about foul weather at sea. Give me a break - when you sail into the open ocean, what do you expect?!!! It matters not if you paid US $10,000 for a passage on the QM2 or US $500 for passage on a freighter: if weather turns sour, the sea isn’t going to be all glistening and flat!
Sounds like a bunch of spoiled geriatric brats to me! ...and a bunch of folks looking for a free ride!
Throw ‘em overboard! I agree!!!!!!

Passengers may be acting like spoiled brats and whinny babies, but who is defining this as a “Mutiny”?
Only a crew Mutinies and I haven’t read anything about the crew doing any such thing. Must be the media looking for attention.
Mike 01.25.06 | 1:34 AM ET
I, too, thought it might be a misuse of “mutiny,” but the actions of the passengers do indeed fit within the dictionary definition. From Merriam-Webster:
Mutiny: forcible or passive resistance to lawful authority
Here’s the full
entry.

What a complete and utter idiot A J Groppe is. I wonder if it were his family on board whether he would be happy at me calling them spoiled geriatric brats. He has no doubt annoyed all the residents of the caribbean, all people on board the QM2 and all the families. Will he reach old age, I doubt it, if he hasn’t already been pushed off the top of a tall building but I’m sure he will have a soft landing given that he is such an epic arsehole!

AJ GROPPE 01.25.06 | 11:17 AM ET
Oh Adele….. how sweet of you, dear.
And Yes. I would be VERY embarassed if my family behaved so poorly and made raging spectacles of themselves as these folks are doing!
Alas, who’s the idiot! I have already reached old age, little girl! My advice: drink lots of prune juice, enjoy sexual intercourse while you still can, love your family, take your vitamins, exercise, pray, give of your time and talent to the less fortunate, and carry a parachute (Thanks for the last one, Adele - hadn’t ever really considered it before)!
Just remember:
In the naval traditions of the world - throughout history - small mutinies were handeled rather quickly: by WALKING THE PLANK!
I hear they grow the sharks big down there in RIO!

Adele Woollin 01.25.06 | 12:33 PM ET
A J Groppe - I am surprised at you reaching old age and having the negative attitude that you have towards others who are of a similar age to you. I certainly do not need you to preach to me about naval traditions of the world - there are passengers on board this ship who have served in the armed forces throughout the world. Obviously you have nothing better to do with your time. Take heed of your own advice.
Glenda 01.25.06 | 3:03 PM ET
A 50% refund is a fair compensation. Save the other 50% and go again! What a deal! If they had offered more there would still be those same negative people wanting MORE, MORE, MORE! Never satisfied and in this “I’m going to sue you” crazed society all they are hoping for is MORE than 100% back! I agree, throw the creeps overboard!
laura tricker 01.25.06 | 7:37 PM ET
Get with the program Rob. Speed per se is not the issue. People have paid for the trip of a lifetime - maiden voyage, luxurious liner - get the picture?
They have stopped at NONE of the scheduled ports of call. Many will disembark in Rio and go home again. To add insult to injury the whole issue has been handled appalling, offers or ‘compensation’ are derisory. How would you like a free GLASS of wine with your dinner Sir? Bring on the sit-in and class action I say. Hollywood will follow.
esperanza 01.25.06 | 9:18 PM ET
What the hell is all this squak about!!!!!!
You sue-happy fools like LAURA TRICKER ought to be ashamed of yourselves!
I’m glad we never made the calls. This ship is a floating dream and all the hooplah is being generated by a bunch of cheap old idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AJ GROPPE is right! The ship herself is the destination for many of us here.
The sad fact is that those who are balking so much are really just pissed off that they were too cheap to pay the extra $$$ for travel insurance to take care of delays and such.
Cheap fools!
I’ll be glad to help Commodore Warwick dispatch the plank after we arrive in Rio tomorrow and before I disembark with the more civilized!!!!
I’ve never heard such a whingey and whiney group of people in my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve told a number of them to shut their holes already and go to the spa to relax. They DON’T want to pay for anything!!!!!
Well, off to another wonderful dinner !
Cunard gets A++++ in my book! And they ought to ban some of my fellow passengers from ever sailing again!

Adele, honey.
I served my country as well. HAVE YOU???
As for having nothing better to do…
Well, I’m retired, standing NEXT to a great big nest egg, and (because I’m NOT SITTING ON IT) am very busy doing all the things this 80 year old body ever dreamed of doing - & that includes saying my peace when I’ve always wanted to but wasn’t comfortable doing so.
Didn’t anyone ever teach you to respect your elders?
Hopefully, you too will reach this age (without being thrown off a building by those of differing opinions) and fully recognize that you have the ability to choose between either basking in life’s challenges or wallowing in it’s disappointments. And it IS TRUE! Life truly is all about the JOURNEY & NOT the destination. How apropos for this given circumstance, don’t you think!
Hint: Didn’t get to 80 by wallowing and bitching (or through frivolous lawsuits either).
So, at this moment, you will recognize, dear, that I am quite comfortable in assiting to illuminate the great march of folly being concocted by you and the VAST minority of those nasty schmucks on board QM2!
laura tricker 01.25.06 | 10:08 PM ET
Dear ‘Esperanza’/Carnival shareholder?
$$$ cannot compensate for broken dreams….spas & bars can be had anywhere. I have no pecuniary interest in this matter, but others require some retribution: I can understand that. Don’t be so angry. I have a right to a viewpoint. YOU DON’T SOUND RESTED FROM THE WONDERFUL TIME YOU’RE HAVING ON BOARD. Finally, whilst you’re throwing your extra $$$ around for travel insurance, East African is on the brink of a humanitarian catatrophe, Axxxxxxx.
esperanza 01.25.06 | 10:57 PM ET
shareholder in Carnival?
excuse…..........................................................
I don’t hold any shares in anything, you assuming [snip]!
what broken dreams?!?!?!?! St. Kitts is a rip-off island! been there many a time!
I’m not angry - just DISGUSTED at all the NASTINESS on board. Throwing money around?
Glad I ‘threw the extra’ $200 around for travel insurance’ rather than the $1000+ your friends/relatives/whatever are going to be spending tomorrow evening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way - been all around the world to the best spas and bars -
have yet to top this one on QM2! If you’re smart, you’d by a ticket after repairs are made and see for yourself.
Eight passages and counting, sweets===
By the way,
what have YOU done for East Africa of late?
My 2$M & TIME IN CONTINENT has found its way… HAS YOURS???????????????
for shame.

You guys are a hoot, but I have a rather serious question to ask: In four weeks my wife and I will be on our first cruise and I was wondering if I should purchase new boxing gloves or will the old ones do?

Cunard and the Compensation Culture
Cunard chose the lesser of all evils in providing refunds to its passengers on the recent voyage of Queen Mary 2 from the US to Brazil.
My sympathies rest entirely with the company. The passengers had the benefit of the most luxurious passenger ship in the world, all the entertainment, company, and food they could possibly wish for, served by the most willing and friendly crew and staff.
I sailed to New York on the QM 2 last year, and to say it was the most fantastic experience does not do it justice. Truly wonderful.
The complaining passengers on this most recent trip appeared to forget they were on a ship (I even heard one lady interviewed saying “but all we can see is the sea!”).
If they wish to visit Barbados etc. there are other ways to get there. Surely the major point of travelling on a ship is the voyage itself.
Poor Cunard. A small group now see it as an easy target. A sad reflection on our times.
derek.marble 01.28.06 | 3:51 PM ET
Poor Cunard!!! The consolidated drinks bill onboard, alone, makes a healthy contribution to the company’s coffers.
When you are trapped onboard with no respite, it’s hardly a holiday.
I would want a full refund PLUS a gesture of goodwill.
This company has a poor appreciation of customer service, customer loyalty and repeat business from loyal customers.
Instead of making a spontaneous move to placate their customers, they’ve sought to positively aggravate them and then be forced into action by the public spotlight.
Katie 01.28.06 | 8:04 PM ET
This sounds like a nightmare. Why not just go on with your trip on such a beautiful ship, and count your blessings when you arrive home safely. All of the grumbling is just not worth all of the stress. After the announcement that no stops would be made at the ports the drinks, spa, and all other costs should be on the cruise line. Enough already. Stop making ridiculous comparisons, and how would u like it if your family member was on the ship and they decided to throw everyone overboard. What a waste of time and energy. Get over it. Why give this so much attention, when people will be still signing on the dotted line. Get home safely.

derek-
12 trips on Cunard under my belt~
the nightly bar tab on Cunard is much LESS expensive than your local tavern! trust me!
The QM2 (been on three trips and counting…) is hardly a place I’d refer to as a ‘trap.’
Between the Planetarium (three different shows per voyage), Oxford University Extension campus (scores of varying lectures per voyage), DELICIOUS food - and I mean 4**** and better - all day - every day - instrumental entertainment - and that wonderful Canyon Ranch Spa -
hardly a prison!
This company has been very good to me - and I’m a “no-buddy” - just a hard worker who saved her whole life to travel in retirement -
The extra day on board QM2 would have been a very welcome happenstance for those not trying to bide a free ride! The folks who felt trapped should have originally opted for a flight to those dreadful, bug-infested islands that they were so heart-broken to miss.
I feel bad they were disappointed, but come on here - After three trips on QM2, I still don’t know every nook and cranny - and there is Lots to see. Trapped? Not a chance…
I agree. Poor Cunard. And shame on all those who freeloaded on a five-star floating hotel for two weeks without paying a dime!
You know what they say…. what goes around comes around.
A great disservice has been had here - at the expense of a reputable company with an illustrious history and I hope Cunard refuses future business from these creeps!

Sorry to say but Cunard, who is owned by Carnival are at fault for lousy customer appreciation in my view….First off, I’ve traveled many times on various Royal Caribbean and Carnival cruises. Both companies are the leaders in their industries yet treat customers with disdain when there is a problem. I’m glad that finally a large group of passengers revolted against their half hearted compensation attempts. Traveling on Cunard which I’m sure is expensive is the trip of a lifetime for some of these folks..why should they have their trip ruined by personnel(captain or purser) who don’t seem to give a hoot about that(the mere fact of “nothing we can do is rediculous) As the passenger said originally, if they would have been more organized and forthcoming then none of this would probably have happened or at least in such large numbers….Let them mutiny or whatever it is that they did…send a message to Cunard and it’s management that they’d better shape up or ship out of their business if they want to keep their future customers. Customer service is a top differentiator now…obviously Cunard still has a lot to learn about that…even at the top end of the pricing range.
Martin 01.29.06 | 7:56 PM ET
GammyNJ and Glenda are what’s wrong with this nation today, a bunch of entitled complainers!
Martin 01.29.06 | 7:58 PM ET
In the above post I meant laura tricker and Bob M, not Gammy J and Glenda
derek marble 02.12.06 | 1:12 PM ET
Get real! Cunard is a commercial supplier, which entered into a contract with many members of the public - to supply a package holiday, including breaks on dry land.
They broke their contract…
There were then faced with 2 main choices - and got it badly wrong. They succeeded in generating badwill and bad publicity. If I were a shareholder I’d be on to the Board demanding a change of policy for future failures tp protect the long-term brand and profits! We all live and learn…
or do we?
At least Laura understood the real situation.
Gammy NJ 02.19.06 | 11:44 PM ET
dear free-ride derek,
contract or no contract -
accidents happen, you’d agree?
Cunard-Carnival are NOT at fault. It would appear that the Port Everglades pilot was ultimately responsible at the time for SAFELY guiding QM2 and her passengers through Port Everglades. His - viz-a-viz Pt. Everglades - is the back the must bear the burden of fault here - not Cunard.
Are you familiar with ‘Judge Judy’?
As she would ask…“Are you stupid?”
It is wrong to take things that do not belong to you, sir! The islands could NOT possiblty offer what QM2 does - the folks who missed the islands ought to be thankful for the amenities the ship offers. Have u been on her? doubtful, I should think!
Cunard has the most impeccable record in the industry for leaving/arriving on time and she left on time last month from Port Everglades - REMEMBER : port pilot= Master of the Vessel while transiting port= Port Everglades.
Say, have you ever been in an accident?
Shame on you. and shame on those bloodsucking few opportunists who almost ruined a great trip for all those left on board.
You truly are as much an idiot as Laura Tricker who is so obviously similarly intellectually dim as yourself and its more than quite obvious from the above posts that I am not alone in my summary.
If anything, Cunard ought to strive better to screen out such “rif-raff” as you and Laura - your kind should be “counseled otherwise” from sailing Cunard - and u probably couldn’t afford it either .... which is, perhaps, the root of your envious objections afterall.
Cunard isn’t WalMart, guy, nor does it behave so…. Get with the program!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sail on SeaEscape and bust their nuggets!
Jerk!
