Road Tripping with Alfonso Cuarón

Alfonso Cuarón’s latest film, Y Tu Mamá También, follows two teenage boys and a beautiful older woman as they travel through Mexico in search of “Heaven’s Mouth,” a place that doesn’t actually exist. The boys made it up to entice their sexy traveling companion to join them on the road. It might sound like yet another bad teenage flick, but it’s not. It’s a large-hearted road movie, a genre that’s close to Cuarón’s heart. In an interview with the Savvy Traveler, he talks about his love of travel—he’s the kind of guy who plans a one-day stop in Jerusalem and ends up staying for three weeks—and why road trips and road movies hold sway over travelers and audiences.
“It’s easier to create a bond while you’re traveling,” says Cuarón. “It’s amazing because sometimes when you’re traveling you create this strong bond and, at the end of the journey, you may not see that person ever again. But while you’re traveling that bond is very important. As you’re stripped from your frame of reference, your companion becomes your frame of reference.”
