Some Travel Writers Will Do Anything for a Buck

Every time I watch it on the Winter Olympics, I decide that luge is an utterly insane sport that you could not pay me enough to try.

“Chicago Tribune” reporter Christoper Borrelli evidently does not feel the same way. They paid, he tried (in Muskegon, Michigan). Here’s the story.

A sample: “Sue Halter, my instructor, told me that in 15 years here she had seen only one person lose teeth while luging.”

Some people will do anything for a buck.

Sophia—I don’t want to wear the luge outfit but I so want to try the luge (story or not—ok, story). Will you give me a buck if I do?

Yes, Jenna. I will definitely give you a buck if you try it. I will give you two bucks if you wear the suit while you do.

I will require photo proof.

I’ll just go for the single smackeroo. Not sure if I can fit it into the winter 2009 calendar but…it’s gonna happen. Start ironing my dollar. I want it nice and crisp.

OK Sophia, what’s the craziest thing you’ve done for a story?

Chris—Are you the luging Christopher?

Hmmm, probably a tie between putting on a wetsuit and jumping into freezing water in Washington state to allow Coast Guard trainees to rescue me (I have photos somewhere) and eating a live ant in the Amazon.

But I am the opposite of a thrill seeker. I’m more a snack seeker.

This should be some travel writers will do anything for their job too! The reporter dis his job very well despite the risk and the difficulty of the sport he was reporting on.

Jenna - I have, in fact, never luged. I am also not sure that was the right word. Nor am I a newspaper man, except for a little bit in college.

I don’t get in to the eating crazy stuff contests (a la Fear Factor), but you get major points for the Coast Guard Rescue training. To me that sounds kind of fun, except for the freezing water part.
