That Rough Landing Wasn’t the Captain’s Fault. It Was the Asphalt!

Comedy, as we’ve said before, has become as much a part of modern air travel as jet lag. A story by Jayne Clark in this weekend’s USA Today confirms that funny flying is spreading across the U.S. It’s not all about the yuk yuk cabin announcements, wannabe stand-up comedian pilots and airlines listing fun as a core value. Clark’s piece profiles Dave George, Independence Air’s “FLYi Guy,” the nation’s only airport comedian.
“He works the gates at the low-fare carrier’s hub in suburban Washington,” Clark writes, “initiating contests and the occasional ‘thunderstorm party’ and generally livening up the place.” Some passengers are not amused. “This is not my idea of fun,” said Sara Kirby, whose flight was long delayed. “I appreciate what they’re doing, but it’s still not getting us out of here.” USA Today posts some audio and video of George’s shtick, so you can decide for yourself.
Elsewhere in the paper, Anthony Breznican has a good overview of the “Planes-in-peril” movie genre, timed to coincide with today’s release of Wes Craven’s “Red Eye.”
