The Titanic Memorial Cruise: Tasteless or Touching?

Miles Morgan Travel, the company behind the Titanic Memorial Cruise, tells Reuters it has “come in for a little bit of criticism,” but stresses the upcoming trip is meant to be “a commemoration not a ghoulish recreation of the original journey.”

It may or may not be ghoulish, but it is a recreation. The cruise will depart Southampton, England on April 8, 2012, 100 years to the day after the original Titanic’s departure. On April 12, 2012, it will stop at the exact spot Titanic sank.

“I’ve had several people in tears on the phone,” Miles Morgan said. “I was reading the itinerary to one woman and she literally broke down.”

Seems to qualify as ghoulish to me. Kind of like organizing a memorial “run on the beach” event for the Boxing Day tsunami, no?

I laughed out loud when I got the press release. Surely this is a joke, I thought. And then I realized it was not.  But people visit cemeteries around the world. Michigan has laid out a drive that follows on land the path on water of the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald that sank in 1975. If it’s ghoulish, I guess there is an audience out there for ghoulish. However, I just can’t help thinking whether I would want to set foot on a ship about to take what they describe as a “memorable cruise” on the path of the Titanic. One hopes it is not QUITE as memorable as the original.

I don’t really find this ghoulish, obviously they aren’t going to reenact what happened on the actual Titanic. I think this is a pretty brilliant idea, and only happens once a century. It’s a commemoration; that historians and Titanic fans will both enjoy. I wish I could get myself a ticket. People visit concentration camps which I don’t find strange at all… why should this be any different? You can’t deny that we all saw this one coming.

This is more scary than creepy. I’d do it but I would be paranoid the whole way through, especially when stopping where the cruise sunk.
