Travel Movie Watch: ‘Risk’

News broke yesterday that a movie version of the classic board game is in the works, with Will Smith as a producer and possible star. Blogger Colin Boyd is excited about the project, but I’m not so sure.
My favorite thing about the game was always the board itself—if you haven’t guessed that I’m a map geek by now, you haven’t been paying attention—but I can’t imagine how a movie would capture that global sweep, the bird’s-eye view of people moving across the continents. I can only hope the producers care enough about that element of the game to try.

Wow, this sounds like an interesting movie. I wonder how they are going to make a plot for this though?

Sounds like a challenging transformation from slow-moving board game to drama-filled movie. I wonder if they will use animated, bird’s-eye maps to show time-lapse maneuvers, like crossing the Atlantic to attack Brazil from North Africa, and then snap back to a ground-level battle sequence. Better yet, I could see a scene involving a scheming general in a field tent unrolling a dirty map resembling the risk board. If they don’t have at least some maps worked in to the movie, that would be a disappointment.

Wow, fancy playing pieces in that photo. When I was a kid the pieces were plastic Roman numerals.
