Timothy Egan has noticed something during his recent travels in the U.S.: “a surfeit of American flags.” In his story in the New York Times, he takes a shot at explaining the abundance of Stars and Stripes.

For a look at how the flag flies outside the U.S., check out our American Flag in a Shrinking Planet slideshow.

It’s true that it’s fashionable to be an American again. During the Bush years, it was a mixed blessing. I don’t know whether more flags are flying in Blue states or less in Red states, but Americans as travelers are definitely feeling a lot more welcome in foreign lands than before.

Americana is on the uprise—as are visits, I bet, to places like DC, Boston, Philadelphia (where I am now). But you could find US flags around NYC even, if you know where to look. Walking around Queens’ Sunnyside district a few years ago, I wasn’t sure what was more exotic for New York: the little brick homes on Leave It to Beaver streets or the US flags hanging from (many) porches.
