Travel Editors Rethink Post-September 11 Stories

USA Today’s Jayne Clark interviewed editors at all the major glossy travel magazines to see how their publications would change in the wake of the terrorist attacks and U.S. retaliation. “It’s a tricky thing,” acknowledges Keith Bellows, editor of National Geographic Traveler. “You have to be responsible, and you have to be responsive. We’re looking at every image, every headline, every story (and asking), ‘Is this going to be misperceived?’ ” A Condé Nast Traveler survey found that their readers are still willing to travel, and will publish accordingly. In general, the editors promise less about luxury, more about security and, in some cases, stories promoting New York City as a viable destination.
