Stephanie Oswald spent 13 years as a travel reporter and producer for CNN. In that time, she says, she learned that women traditionally control a family’s travel destiny. Hence, she believes that her new magazine Travelgirl will fill an untapped niche in mainstream travel media by explicitly targeting women. “There are so many magazines out there, but none that are geared specifically to women,” Oswald told Media Life magazine reporter Jeff Bercovici. According to Bercovici, however, Travelgirl won’t have the niche to itself. Oswald’s spin ignores the heavily female readership of the American glossies Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler, not to mention independent media successes Journeywoman and Adventure Divas. Travelgirl launches with a first run of 48,000 copies, which are available at Borders and Barnes and Noble bookstores.
