Walking the West Bank: ‘To Roam Freely, at Will, Without Restraint’

imageThe New York Times has a compelling story following Raja Shehadeh, author of Palestinian Walks: Forays Into a Vanishing Landscape, on a hike around the region. Shehadeh’s book covers six walks; the Times piece covers a trek that began near the village of Ein Sinya.

From an occupied territory restricted by checkpoints, walls and other barriers, the story brings to life Shehadeh’s unexpected tale of exploration through slideshows and video of dramatic and rural West Bank landscapes rarely portrayed by the media.

Despite the obvious irony, Shehadeh refers to his hiking as sarha, writing, “Sarha is to roam freely, at will, without restraint. A man going on a sarha wanders aimlessly, not restricted by time and place.”
