The Ethics of Nicholas Kristof’s Travels

The New York Times columnist has famously purchased the freedom of Cambodian slave-prostitutes and taken college students with him on trips to Africa. He’s even said that travel should play a central role in American education. His heart is surely in the right place. But is he ethical?

Portfolio’s Jeff Bercovici questioned Kristof’s approach to a recent column from Beijing. Kristof responded to the post, and, all in all, it seems much ado about nothing.

Kristof’s heart is definitely in the right place. I used to read his columns regularly, especially during the Orange revolution and his purchase of the prostitutes. But I kindof gave up when he started crusading about Darfur - It was a bit too much coverage of the same thing by the same journalist.
